Fire in the Belly! A Cultural Awakening

Kelly Looking Horse reaches deep into the history and cultural traditions of the Lakota people.  Through this presentation he seeks to invoke a cultural awakening in Native American youth as well as all non-Native American people. This presentation  includes, a Lakota prayer,  participation in a drum circle and stories through traditional song and circle dance.  For Native American youth he encourages pride in who they are striving to be by drawing from their cultural heritage and identity. Kelly combines a historical perspective with insights on the contemporary social and economic challenges many Native Americans experience today. In this way, Kelly hopes to bring a cultural awakening to all people.

The Story of the Drum

Drums are perhaps the oldest musical instrument and are embedded in past and present world cultures. Indeed, the history and story of peoples is often embedded in the way their drums are made and used. In these presentations Kelly Looking Horse discusses the significance of drums in the Lakota traditions as well as the many uses of drums today. Presentations vary in duration and can include "hands on" explanation and demonstration of  drum making techniques.
